Students learn music through an active music making environment. A typical lesson at Fairview includes:
Musical Concepts and Skills
Rhythmic, melodic, instrumental, and various other music concepts are learned one at a time, building upon each other. Following the Kodaly philosophy, music concepts are generally learned by using these three steps:
- Warm-Up Activity - to get the students ready to go, usually focuses on movement, breathing, and rhythmic phrasing.
- Review of previous material - to bring back what was learned in the previous lesson.
- Presentation of new material - a new song, game, or concept is presented.
- Practice - always important in reinforcing the concept in order to ensure retention. Often includes a singing game or instrumental practice.
- Recap - of the concept learned in that lesson.
Musical Concepts and Skills
Rhythmic, melodic, instrumental, and various other music concepts are learned one at a time, building upon each other. Following the Kodaly philosophy, music concepts are generally learned by using these three steps:
- Prepare - The student experiences the concept without knowledge of it. Much like learning to speak before learning to read. After the child is able to perform the concept accurately, it is made conscious that new element is going to be presented.
- Present - The new element is presented, placed somewhere in the room, and given a label. Often stories are used to help the student remember the new concept.
- Practice - The new element is then practiced in a variety of different ways. Students identify, read, write, place on their bodies, improvise, create, and play games with the new concept and all concepts learned previously. At the end of the "practice phase" a new element is already being prepared.
- Starting with speech or at the body, beginning with what is most natural to them
- Adding in singing or instrument playing and transferring what was learned away from instruments.
- Creating, improvising, or arranging music using the new skill.
- Students are also asked to listen and evaluate their performance and work within an ensemble or group setting.
Music Schedule
Students in the Bellevue Public Schools have music classes four days for 50 minutes. Students will not miss music class because of holidays or days when school is not in session. They will simply come to music class the next day. The school year is structured on an eight day cycle, so music your child has music on days 1 & 5, 2 & 6, 3 & 7 or 4 & 7.. The only exception is school closing due to inclement weather.
